Introduction to Mokume Gane
Mokume Gane Patterning workshop with expert Goldsmith Wayne Werner
Experience the beauty of working with “Mokume Gane” a Japanese Metalsmithing. technique that translates into “eye of the wood”. This process manipulates multi-layered billets of different colour metals by punching, twisting and grinding to produce amazing patterns and textures that resemble wood, smoke, and sedimentary layers.
Students can work with a laminated stack of copper and brass, or copper and silver, to expose a pattern. The patterned pieces of metal can be used to create a simple pendant, earrings, or cuff. Some students may wish to use their patterned material in other metalsmithing projects at a latter date.
This is an intro class, however even tenured masters and experienced metalsmiths will be challenged and enlightened. The instructor will supply the billets to be used. Due to time and studio constraints fusing and soldering billets will NOT be covered.
This is a brilliant introductory class to the skill and in the future billet and ring making may be offered if take-up is positive.
This class is open to all skill levels. The instructor will cater to all expectations and limitations.
This fun class yields incredible results with few tools.
Date: October 9th
Times: 10am-4pm with a lunch break
This full day workshop is excellent value for money and a unique opportunity to learn something new with an accomplished metalsmith who has travelled over from the states and connect with an international jewellery community.
Copper and Brass Billets will be sold at an extra charge and students will have a small tools list to bring along to the workshop.
