Deadly Nightshade Ring

£130.00

This ring was hand carved in wax to resemble the deadly nightshade plant, it was then cast into recycled silver.

The berries of deadly nightshade contain a sweet black juice, and are mainly eaten by birds, sheep and rabbits. All parts of the deadly nightshade plant contain tropane alkaloids, a group of toxic chemicals. When eaten they induce strong hallucinations, delirium, headaches and loss of balance. While one leaf or two berries is enough to kill an adult human, the root has the most toxins. Deadly nightshade is known as belladonna (beautiful lady in Italian) and originates from folklore of Italian women using drops made of the plant to dilate pupils and produce a seductive gaze. Atropine (one of the alkaloids) is used dilate pupils in eye surgery and in treatment of hypertension. Hyoscine (another alkaloid) is used as anaesthetic, antidepressant, and prevents motion sickness.
